When traveling to China.

Don’t wear a green hat - It is a sign of infidelity.

Don’t wear white - it is associated with funerals

Don’t give a gift of a clock - it is associated with mortality. Always give gifts in pairs if possible.

Don’t wear yellow or black to a wedding. Wear red, pink, blue or green.

The association with similar sounding words is very important. Different Chinese words can have similar sounds.

Four sounds like the word for death.

Five sounds like happy or lucky.

Six sounds like smooth.

Seven sounds like angry.

Eight sounds making money or prosper and is due to the Cantonese pronunciation. This seems to be the reason that the 2008 Olympics will begin at 8:00 PM on 8/8/2008.

Nine sounds like long lasting or sufficient in Cantonese.

Elders have a status of honor. In America we would not think of calling our parents Old Dad or Old Mom. In China can be a term of respect.

The seat of honor during a meal is not entirely understood. Some say it is facing the door towards the east, and some say it is facing the south.

If you are the host of a meal, remember that when you put down your chopsticks, everyone will follow your example. It is the host’s responsibility to encourage everyone to continue eating.

Don’t sweep the floor or throw out the trash on Chinese New year or you can throw out your family treasure.
